Day 11
Today we took a lab quiz and did an assignment that involved created different spatial analysts using NCDOT DEM data.
Day 9 - GIS111
We spent this class learning about geoprocessing tools like Clipping, merging, dissolve, overlay and spatial joins. The lab this evening included an exercise on dissolve and clip.
Each time I try to post the images from the lab, Blogger gives me an error. Ill try again later.

Day 8 - GIS 111
This evening the class watched a video from ESRI. The professor was not in attendance, although I don't blame him for not showing up, as it was a great day to be outside.

Day 5 and 6
I forgot to mention the two classes that were cancelled. We did however have 2 online exercises that included a video tutorial which made the homework much easier to understand.
Day 7 - GIS 111
I was not able to attend the full class. I did stay for the lecture which covered Satellite imagery.

Day 4 - GIS 111
We took the first test tonight. The last time I took a college exam it was with punch cards, so the whole on-line experience was pretty cool. We also completed exercise 15.

Day 3 - GIS111
The class started off with a beautiful sunset. Unfortunately the 90 some slides were not has colorful. The news of the day was that we had a test next week. So I guess I will have to study some Wednesday night. Tonight we discussed Geodesy & Coord Systems as well as Map Projections. In the first half of the lecture, topics were centered around Ellipsiods, Geoids, and Sphere. The second half of the lecture was centered around Map Projections, their distortion properties, and how ArcMap defines projections and projects datasets.

Day 2 - GIS111
I survived another night in class. We discussed data models (coords and attributes), vector vs. raster data (as well as TIN), and the Geodatabase (new for 9.2). We worked on setting up a Geodatabase in the lab exercise. Although in the exercise we created a new feature class (waterlines), but there is no data. Maybe in another exercise we will import a waterlines mdb (atttribute table)?
I had wondered if someone had plotted Bent Creek out yet and sure enough Pete showed us a KML (Keyhole Markup Language) of the trails. He mentioned that another classmate has a more detailed file that he hopes to share at a later date. Also, a future class exercise will be to create a new map of Bent Creek. How exciting!!! I want to go and buy a GPS unit now.

Module 1
The first day of class went well. The instructor seems cool. Within the class there are various types of people all with unique GIS background and objectives. Since we missed one day we will have to cram a little more in each night than originally planned in the syllabus. The first few modules seem to be straight forward, so the students should breeze through the assignments.
